Sister Gerri Brake M.M. has a mission story that is sure to lift your spirits on this #FeelGoodFriday !
Sister Gerri has been on mission in Panama for 27 years! Less than a year after she arrived, In 1989, the U.S. Army invaded the country in an attempt to replace General Manuel Antonio Noriega. The shelling forced many Panamanians to flee their homes. Sister Gerri and five other Maryknoll Sisters aided the refugees by coordinating food and medical supplies, acting as translators, and caring for the elderly among the refugees.
Sister Gerri continued her work with the elderly even after the refugee situation had been resolved, and, in conjunction with various churches and civic groups, founded Nueva Vida, a foundation and residential center for senior citizens in Balboa, Panama, in 2000.
Sister Gerri is still on mission at her beloved Nueva Vida Residence in Panama, where she continues to offer pastoral services at the residence and has an outreach service to many parishes and volunteer groups in promoting a better life for senior men and women.
